You would be surprised how a simple job like removing a door handle or doorknob can be a frustrating experience if your not prepared. Next find a small slot on the edge of the trim piece. If not rotate the faceplate until the underlying screws are accessible and use a phillips head screwdriver to remove them. Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the hole.

Apply a bit of pressure to the paper clip to trigger a release button inside the hardware. You rightfully infer it will be easy enough simply take out a few screws and take the knob right off. Unfortunately with a plethora of doorknobs available on the market you may not even know what kind you have. Look for a thin slot or a recessed hex head setscrew on the lock side of the doorknob.

Once triggered the lever or lock trim can be removed from the door.
