House Door Handle Wont Open From Outside

Looking through the crack at the latch i think that s the word for it the metal part that goes inside the door when you move the handle it won t retract into the door completely.

A door knob or door handle uses a spring loaded latch. When the door knob is locked the handle will not turn which keeps the latch from retracting. Door opens fine from the inside but i can t open from the outside. How to fix a door knob that turns but doesn t open.

The turning of the handle retracts the latch by pulling on the spring and compressing it. Door handle doesn t feel loose or anything. I might add that many parts houses sell packages of clips cheap in. Then the door stopped opening altogether. The part of a doorknob that you grasp with your hand connects to a rod that extends though the door to the knob on the other side. Eventually it just stopped opening from the outside completely and someone would have to open it from the inside.

Any idea before i open the door panel. In the resting state of the lock the spring is extended.
